Introduction

This book is the first attempt that ever be theoretically and empirically done to investigate and theorize “amae” from social-cognitive and cultural psychological perspectives. Through theoretical and qualitative analyses of amae, it elucidates its nature (i.e., functions and structure), good and bad aspects, and interactional processes. This results in a proposal of the process-models of amae behaviors/interactions, emphasizing the relational nature of such interactions. Furthermore, it illustrates, and demonstrates the utility of, one method of empirically investigating amae cross-culturally.
