内容紹介

本書は、生成文法ミニマリストプログラムにおける、pair-Merge の可能性について考察したものである。通常 pair-Merge は Adjunct のみに適用されるとされるが、Chomsky (2015) 以降の Free Merger の考えを突き詰めると、このような恣意的な操作の適用は望ましくない。本書では、pair-Merge も set-Merge も、Adjunct にも Argument にも適応可能という「Radical Free Merger」を提案し、様々な言語現象の説明を試みる。

1章の導入の後、2章で理論的な背景を概観し、3章にて Radical Free Merger の具体的な説明を行う。3章でみるように、Radical Free Merger のもとでは、操作の適用について、set-Merge と pair-Merge、そしてさらにそれらの Internal な適用と External な適用により、External set-Merge、Internal set-Merge、External pair-Merge、Internal pair-Merge の4種類の論理的可能性が導かれる。そしてそれらの操作が Argument と Adjunct のどちらにも適用可能であるとすると、操作の可能性は8通り存在することになる。その後の章ではこれらの可能性の内、通常の想定のもとでは議論されることがない、Argument の External/Internal pair-Merge と Adjunct の External/Internal set-Merge について詳細に考察していく。

まず4章においては、Argument の External pair-Merge の可能性に基づいて様々な言語現象を考察する。4章での議論は、英語の経験主項、英語の二重目的語構文、受動文への考察を含み、また章の最後では Adjunct の External/Internal set-Merge の可能性についても考察している。5章では Argument の Internal pair-Merge の可能性について考察し、かき混ぜ操作と数量詞繰り上げが、実は Argument の Internal pair-Mergeの結果生じていると主張する。最後に6章では、言語の左周辺部に関わる Cartography 研究について、Radical Free Merger の立場からどのような帰結が得られるかを考察する。
