1977年,九州大学工学部鉄鋼冶金学科卒業。
1979年,同大学大学院工学研究科材料開発工学専攻修士課程修了。
1983年,南カリフォルニア大学大学院材料科学科博士課程修了。
同大学大学院材料科学科研究員,九州大学工学部助手・助教授,
アリゾナ州立大学高分子分解能電子顕微鏡センター客員教授などを経て,
2001年より九州大学大学院工学研究院教授。
現在,九州大学大学院工学研究院材料工学部門主幹教授。
